Speaking from Stillness is a fun series transcribing unscripted thoughts while on morning dog walks in my jungle valley. I walk in stillness, then allow whatever arises to get recorded and transcribed. I try to keep them short. The transcript is lightly edited for clarity.
Hmm, kind of a magical day here in the valley. Speaking from the platform slash living room in my backyard, the roof with no walls, from which we connect with this valley.
Today, it’s wonderful because the waters have arrived. A torrential rain overnight, and then waking sometime early, early, and that magic sound that you can’t figure out, that sounds like a flood coming, for a second you’re worried.
It’s the rush of water…Pushing its way down the creek…the empty, dry creek for the last seven months…and Pushing its way down, a force that cannot be stopped…and with a breakthrough, whoosh…it fills the creek as it goes by…and here we are a few hours later…and the water still rushes by. It’s wonderful.
See, we explore this valley, and go up to the heart, where the cascades come down from the back-valley walls. And they have water most of the year round. But the creeks that meander down to the lake are empty, dry. It’s hard to even imagine that they’re full of water for five to six months of the year.
And this year the rains were late and sporadic. And then when they come, the water must rush down off the hills into the creeks, but then there must be enough force, enough energy to be able to push through all of the creeks and pools and eddies and all of the rocks for kilometres, to get down to here so they can rush fully on to the lake.
It’s magic. The water is an unstoppable force that when it starts it overpowers all and flows and rushes through…and that feeling when it does.
When the creeks that feed into the creeks where you live, when they’re filled with so much energy and power, and suddenly they break through. And you are immersed in the sound and the feeling, that overwhelms.
A feeling that doesn’t stay perpetually. But when it arrives, it’s overwhelming. And when the creeks are dry, you can still feel what that fullness is.
A Glimpse Explodes in some way…maybe a small trickle that is unmistakable…might be a dam bursting with rocks exploding…or anything in between. But that feeling is unmistakable and powerful and there is nothing, nothing that stops it.
And it’s nothing that a man or a woman alone can create. It is a force of nature.
And when it comes, it is so welcome. And when it comes, it changes everything.
To the point where even the memory of the Glimpse can bring Joy…a gasp of power…and powerful, powerful, powerful memories and emotions.
Once you feel the Glimpse, the water, it’s unforgettable. And you Know that it has occurred.
The other beautiful part of this morning was (that) four of the dogs decided to have a camping night, and they stayed out in the woods and in the valleys, and didn’t come home. They do that sometimes, often around full moons. But last night the torrential rains came and they still didn’t return. But then this morning as the sun rose, the four trundled in. Wet, wet, wet. And tired. And worn out.
But there was this sense from these four dogs…who had all spent time living in the woods homeless, fending for themselves, wet for months on end. You could see the sense that they all knew, that even as they’re remembering their homeless days…that they were coming home to where they’re welcome.
To where they would be dried off with a towel. To where their bellies would be full. To where their soft beds were waiting. And to where love and comfort and warmth was there.
And there is something wonderful about a Glimpse…and how it does change things, and grows the Love as you follow the Path.
But then to know that that Love and that warmth resides within you…that full belly…and it’s always available, if you sit still, and just come back…Home.
Happy rainy season. It’s time for water and warmth.
