Speaking from Stillness is a fun series transcribing unscripted thoughts while on morning dog walks in my jungle valley. I walk in stillness, then allow whatever arises to get recorded and transcribed. I try to keep them short. The transcript is lightly edited for clarity.
Back on Cascadé Dos. This time after two months of fits and starts, the rainy season is finally here. That’s the real water that I will feel and interact with for the next six months. Nothing could be better!
Path-walking normally starts with some type of Glimpse. There’s so many different types of Glimpses, each one unique to the person. Some small, some majestic, but they all create something, a feeling of ‘More-ness’. And that is something that you can’t leave behind.
Just as you can’t learn to swim by reading a book about swimming, once you do swim, once you do have those first moments of frantic dog paddling, easing into ‘Oh, this suit of mine floats’. And a certain grace sometimes comes to the swimmer.
Once you have felt yourself swim, you always know that it’s possible. It doesn’t go away.
And a Glimpse is a bit like that. You can’t just read about it, but once it happens, the Truth of it just does not go away. And why a Glimpse is so intriguing and potentially all-consuming is that…it’s a Glimpse of Truth.
And once you have a taste of Truth, for most of us, you want to know more and you want to learn more and you want to explore more. And the rabbit holes and the rabbit holes and the rabbit holes open up in front of you.
And the synchronicities of the teachings, and the pointings open up, until all of a sudden you’re firmly ensconced and invested on this Path-walking to Truth.
But reading about swimming can’t make you confident that you can swim, and it is not the Truth of swimming. If you get in the water and there’s some trauma or fear or phobia, and you panic and you’re terrified of swimming, you can’t say that you are a swimmer. You can’t say that it’s easy to swim.
The Glimpse is a Knowing. You might not know what you know. My initial Glimpses, it took me…it took years for me to be able to speak this way about them, because I didn’t know what they were. I didn’t know what they were pointing at.
Over time, I would cross paths with some wisdom, or some text, or some teaching that would make different aspects make sense. And that is part of this path.
If you learn to swim, and you live by the water, it’s hard to never swim again. When there is a Glimpse, and it is of Truth, it’s hard to just forget about it and leave it behind.
And that is how we end up on this path…inquisitive, curious, and looking to explore. And while the path is in some sense well-trodden over millennia, it is not trodden by many.
And each path-walker takes a different route. So getting lost and getting confused is entirely expected, and normal. That is why the teachings exist.
It is good that you are here. It is good that you are exploring.
It is good that you have the interest to keep exploring.
Because it is a Wonderful Thing.
