Speaking from Stillness is a fun series transcribing unscripted thoughts while on morning dog walks in my jungle valley. I walk in stillness, then allow whatever arises to get recorded and transcribed. I try to keep them short. The transcript is lightly edited for clarity.
The Genuine Pretender is a name or a description of a Taoist Sage.
One who Knows that they are living in a human body, and as a human with a body and a mind, who’s experiencing, in this natural world, roles are played.
When it’s time to be teacher, when it’s time to be student, when it’s time to be cook, host, guest…all of these are roles.
But the Taoist Sage Knows that, in essence, those roles are external. They do not touch the Truth of being empty, of acting in this moment, with Effortless Action.
When a role appears and requires performance, Wu Wei allows the Sage to act with what is required, to play the role required of this moment. But it’s playing a role.
There’s never an identification of, ‘I am that teacher, I am that student, I am a butcher, a baker, a cabinet maker.’
It is a role we play, in the moment. And that’s where the Genuine Pretending comes from.
You fully allow yourself to be ‘in the role’…while Knowing you are ‘not the role’.
You identify with nothing…except the present moment.
And in that way, the great role is played. And that is allowing the Tao to work through and experience through this body-mind…without filters, without creation of an identity, or hanging on to or grasping an identity, or pushing away a role that is not wanted.
The Genuine Pretender Plays the Role…Fully and Completely.
And that allows life without suffering. And with much, much playing.
The Genuine Pretender.
