The Peace That Passeth

Is Not A State To Achieve, But The Stillness That Inhabits Everything

Speaking from Stillness is a fun series transcribing unscripted thoughts while on morning dog walks in my jungle valley. I walk in stillness, then allow whatever arises to get recorded and transcribed. I try to keep them short. The transcript is lightly edited for clarity.

Another wonderful Amoda Maa episode this morning on Peace.

The ‘Peace That Passeth All Understanding’, and how the Peace isn’t linked to an emotion of calm, or serene, or unperturbed…it is the Ground of Being…the basic, most fundamental state of what we are…and when I say we, that is Awareness, Consciousness.

And as we are Awareness and Consciousness, you can consider that Awareness and Consciousness resides ‘In us and as us.’

The analogy was Peace was like the depths of the Ocean. It’s not acting in a way to be Peaceful, it just is, and that is the state, and where the action of our reality is, is at the surface of the Ocean, with the waves and the currents…the things that feel individual and strong and powerful…but they are All the Ocean.

And understanding the Peace at our core, is to understand that we are the Ocean, and the Peace is the depths of the Ocean.

Now this Peace is not something we can achieve through practice. It’s not something that we can aspire to have. And again, it is not an emotion that ‘Oh through mindfulness and meditation I create a calm mind.’

That is true from a human perspective of trying to calm down your mind and your nervous system through somatic practices.

But this Peace is something different from that. It can’t be achieved through a practice, it can’t be achieved in a cave, it can’t be achieved living as a hermit in a mountain valley.

It is the relinquishing of the sense of self, the individual small s-self, the finite-being. It is the relinquishing of ‘I am that, I identify with that body and mind’, because it’s not the body and mind that creates Peace, or feels Peace.

Peace is before that…Peace is Everything…and it is the Stillness which inhabits Everything.

Not achievable by living in a mountain hermit valley in isolation, because that is creating a state and a belief that (it) is only within this particular state that Peace can be achieved. However, you can practice residing and abiding and connecting with the true Self, as you live in amongst Everything, the natural system that you are One with.

But it’s important that the connection with Peace that can happen in nature, should reside with you, in whatever circumstance you have. So even the hermit, the man in the cave, the monastery, that may be a place to practice connection and abiding with Peace, but it is not the state of achieving.

At some point, all the practices drop away.

At some point all the striving drops away.

At some point even the identification as a spiritual-being connecting with Peace drops away.

And what is left is a wonderful human Experience…in The Now, in The Moment,

Connecting with the large S-self, the natural world of Relativity…

With no aspirations…

Only depth of Experiencing that can only occur when you reside in The Moment,

In which you find Your Self.

That is the true depth of Experience,

That is Joy, and

There is where we connect to Peace.
